I painted this piece using the historical Lapis Lazuli blue paint for the background and her eyes, a pigment which has been mined in Afghanistan for over 6,000 years.

I was inspired by the way it was used in medieval artwork, particularly in paintings of the virgin Mary. In certain parts of Europe, prior to Christianity, some peoples would worship the goddess Diana: A virgin goddess who would hunt with wolves by night and was symbolized by the moon. Later on in paintings, Mary was often depicted cloaked in this blue color, the same color as the night sky, with a crown of stars around her head. Perhaps a nod to the symbolism of this earlier goddess.
